Starting in Karts at 15, Steve went on the become the Australian Formula Ford Champion in 1994, driving AUSCAR at the Calder Thunder dome in 1995. In 1995, 96 and 97 Steve drove in the 2ltr Super Tourer Championships. In 1996 Steve also started his V8 Supercar career in the V8 Supercars Championship. Competing in the Supercars Championship until 2010, Steve drove for both the factory Holden and Ford supported teams. Partnering with Craig Lowndes, Steve is codriver in the V8 Supercars Endurance events for Triple 8 Race Engineering.
In 1998, Steve’s career took him to Europe where he was a test driver in the British Touring Car Championships for the Nissan Motorsports Europe team based In England. Returning home in time for the 2Ltr Bathurst 1000, Steve came second to father and Bathurst legend, Jim. Less than one month later, Steve won the first of his four V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000 titles, taking victory driving for Ford. In 1999, Steve won his 2nd Bathurst 1000 title, this time driving for Holden. To date, Steve is the only driver who has won back to back Bathurst 1000’s driving for different manufacturers.
In 2002, Steve won the inaugural Bathurst 24 Hour race with Garry Rogers Motorsport driving a Holden Monaro, backing it up in 2003 with 2nd position.
After the conclusion of his full-time V8 Supercars career, Steve entered the Australian Carrera Cup Championship in 2011 in a team backed by Laser Plumbing & Electrical. Steve has consistently been a top five championship runner since joining the series. His highlight was in 2014 when he won the championship title and broke the stranglehold on the series held by Craig Baird. It was his first championship title in twenty years.
In 2015 Steve won his 4th Bathurst 1000 title, driving with Craig Lowndes and announced his partnership with BMW. Competing in the Australian GT Championship series as a full time driver with his own team, Steve Richards Motorsport, the team became the factory-supported customer entrant for the new BMW M6 GT3 in Australia.
Celebrating 21 years in car racing, Steve’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading drivers continues to grow, both as a competitor, and as a mentor to the next generation of champions.
